Notes - In the 1881 and subsequent censuses, the wife of Elkanah wife is called Sophia, which leads me to believe that Lydia was actually Lydia Sophia. The 1900 Census of Boston, MA tells us that Elkanah and Sophia have been married for 32 years and while that's not quite right, the 1910 Census tells us they have been married for 45 years, which is exactly right. It is possible that Lydia shortly after they are married and he takes a second wife, named Sophia; but there is no death record for her, no subsequent marriage records for him, and the 45 years married in the 1910 Census is right on the money.
