- What is certain is this:
a. On 3 Mar 1839, a John CHURCH m. an Elizabeth HAWBOLDT and the marriage is recorded at St. Stephen's Anglican, Chester.
b. The family of a John CHURCH appears in the 1871 Census of Chester and, from the death record of his son Constant Church, his wife can be identified at Elizabeth BACHMAN, b. 1822. This John CHURCH is born in 1807 and dies 1860; Elizabeth (BACHMAN) Church is b. 1822 and d. 1916.
c. An Elizabeth CHURCH d. 1856 at Marriott's Cove.
d. Sons Constant and William's death records lists their mother as Elizabeth BACKMAN
e. Daughter Eliza's death record lists her mother as Sophia HAWBOLDT
What is not certain is whether these two John CHURCH's are the same person. There seems to be only one other John CHURCH who might have married Elizabeth HAWBOLDT, but he is the wrong religion and is not from Chester. So I think it most likely that the two John CHURCH's above are the same man.
Assuming this is correct, it is much less certain which wife sons John, James, and Constant belong to since it is not at all certain that the Elizabeth Church who d. 1856 is Elizabeth (HAWBOLDT) CHURCH. She dies at Marriott's Cove, rather than Aspotogan; but this could be explained by the fact that her husband was often at sea and her brother George lived at Marriott's Cove. Also, if Elizabeth BACKMAN is the only mother sons Constant and William could remember, she is the person we might expect to see on their marriage and death records. On the other hand, we also know that other CHURCH families lives at Marriott's Cove; she could belong to one of them and we do not know her age at death. Also, that there seems to be a gap in the John CHURCH family birth order between 1846 and 1850.
On balance, I think the first five children belong to Elizabeth BACKMAN, the last two belong to Elizabeth BACHMAN, and sons John , James, and Constant remain a question. They are assigned here to Elizabeth BACHMAN mainly beCAUSe of the gap in the birth order and the uncertainty as to the identity of the Elizabeth CHURCH who d. 1856. [Bob H]
