    • The facts are these:

      a. A John CROOKS b. 1827 shows up in the 1871 Census of Marie Joseph, Guysborough, and we know that every other CROOKS family in the vicinity of Marie Joseph came from Lunenburg. [From other sources we know that John and Elizabeth are actually living at Ecum Secum, which is in the Marie Joseph district]

      b. In his household, there is a widower, Thomas CROOKS, age 70.

      c. On 23 Jun 1827 in Lunenburg County, a John CROOKS, s/o Thomas and Eliza CROOKS, is born.

      d. On 09 Dec 1823, one Thomas CROOKS m. Elizabeth PUBLICOVER.

      e. I can find only two Thomas CROOKS the above groom could be:

      1. Thomas Littlejohn CROOKS b. 28 Apr 1798; and

      2. Matthias Thomas CROOKS b. 12 Apr 1790.

      This suggests that:

      a. The Thomas in the 1871 household is not the father of John. And his age, 70 is a good fit for Thomas Littlejohn, but not for Matthias Thomas.

      b. Matthias Thomas CROOKS has a younger brother, Matthias b. 21 Jan 1793. To me, this suggests that the name Matthew was re-used.

So, I believe it is Thomas Littlejohn CROOKS who m. Elizabeth PUBLICOVER
