• Notes

  Some genealogies list both a Matilda and a Bruce SMITH as children in this family. I believe Matilda's placement here arises from confusion of Thomas Smith 1817 with his nephew Thomas Smith 1824, who clearly does have a daughter named Matilda. As to Bruce SMITH, there does not seem to be any historical evidence, at least that I have been able to find, to show that he ever existed. Also, see notes for Nora Catherine SMITH 1872, d/o Sarah Elizabeth (SMITH) HARTLING. Some genealogies list both a Matilda and a Bruce SMITH as children in this family.
