  • Notes
    • The husbands of Louisa Ann [Lucy] CROFT and Christina BORN present a puzzle as both are named Frederick SARTY and there are records indicating that both were born in 1807. The problem is that there is only one Fred SARTY b. 1807 and the other “available” Fred SARTY is a cousin b. 1810.

What we know of Fred and Lucy (CROFT) SARTY is that they married in 1836, that they lived in Camperdown, and that the marker of Fred, h/o of Lucy reads 1807-1895; further, the 1871 Census states that his age is 60, placing his birth in 1810, and the 1881 Census states that this Fred is age 69, placing his birth in 1811. Alternatively, we know that Fred and Christina (BORN) SARTY were married in 1835, they lived in the Conquerall Area, and the marker of Fred h/o Christina, states that he died 1877 at age 72; further, the 1871 Census states that this Fred is age 63, placing his birth in 1807. Finally, Canon Harris says that the husband of Lucy is Frederick Lewis, s/o George Lewis; but Canon Harris was a later Mahone Bay curate and although his work is an invaluable source of clues, he is often wrong, especially when dealing with non-Anglicans from other areas.

Now in the 1838 Census of Camperdown, of the three SARTY's who live there, there is no mistaking Philip SARTY; he is s/o James Fred 1776 and Frances TANNER, and known brother of Fred 1810. Further, in the 1871 Census of Conquerall Bank, there is no mistaking the Leonard and Sophia SARTY who live there; he is s/o George LEWIS SARTY and known brother of Fred 1807.

Also, there is the fact that Jacob SARTY, whom I believe to “missing” eighth son of George Lewis SARTY, marries two sisters of Christina BORN, which points towards her marrying a brother of Jacob, in this case Fred Lewis SARTY.

Finally, at the baptism of Maria Louisa SARTY, d/o Fred and Lucy (CROFT) SARTY in 1844, the sponsors are George and Mary Ann (WAMBOLDT) SARTY. I believe that his George is George Fred 1816, s/o James Fred and Frances (TANNER) SARTY, which points directly to Fred 1810 as Maria Louisa's father.

So, on the basis of the geographical, census, and kinship evidence, all of which is admittedly circumstantial, Fred Lewis SARTY 1807 is carried as the wife of Christina and Fred SARTY 1810 as the h/o Lucy until further evidence is uncovered. [Bob H]
