- The identity of the person who married John HARTLEN and is the mother of at least five children is not known for certain. The facts are these:
a. A John HARTLEN marries an Elizabeth SLAUNWITE in 1855 at St. Paul's, Halifax.
b. Elizabeth is found in the Halifax City Directory from 1870-1871 through 1873-1874, but her children are seen living with their oldest brother in the 1881 Census of Halifax.
c. She is shown in the city directories as the widow of John or John George HARTLEN.
d. She is listed as Sarah HARTLEN, age 35, widow, Roman Catholic, in the 1871 Census.
There seem to be three and only three candidates who fit this description:
a. Sarah Jane, bp. 2 Jan 1835 at OLMC, d/o John Fred and Catherine (Glover) SLAUNWHITE. Although she is RC, she does not bear the name Elizabeth, which is consistently used by the wife of John HARTLEN.
b. Jane Elizabeth, b. 19 Mar 1935, bp. 19 Mar 1935 at St. Paul's, Hfx, d/o John George and Mary Ann (Slaunwhite) SLAUNWHITE. Although she is b. CofE, her father is known to convert to RC in 1851, two of her sisters are known to convert in 1854, and other siblings are buried in RC cemeteries; so she fits very nicely into the picture of someone who is married CofE in 1856, has children baptised in both faiths, and later gives her religion as RC. Further, her sister, Caroline Margaret, marries William HARTLEN (who is CofE), s/o Hannah JOLLIMORE, in a RC ceremony. To my mind, this adds weight not only to her case but to the notion that her husband was also her brother-in-law.
c. Mary Elizabeth, b. 25 Jan 1836, bp. 25 Mar 1836 at St. Paul's, Hfx, d/o John Jacob and Anna Catherina (Slaunwhite) SLAUNWHITE. She is born CofE E and there is no indication that she or any member of her family later became RC
So, although this is still just a (possibly educated) guess, Jane Elizabeth is carried here as the wife of this John HARTLEN. [Bob H]
