- The general consensus seems to be that the husband of Catherine MILLER was Caspar TANNER b. 1839, s/o Caspar and Anna Gertrude (WHYNOT) TANNER; however, I suspect that this is yet another self-perpetuating error. The main reason for this suspicion is that his 1917 death record gives his age as 80, and every census record I have found seems to confirm this. That would place his birth in 1837 and make him the s/o of Leonard TANNER and Maria Catherine BECK.
The question then arises--whose son is Leonard, father of Caspar 1837. There are only two seemingly reasonable choices--Leonard 1779 or his son Leonard 1816. Leonard 1779 seems to be ruled out because his will does not mention a son named Caspar. On the other hand, we know first, that Leonard 1816 does not appear to marry until 1847 at at 31; that second, he has an illegitimate son by Maria Catherine BECK in 1941; and third, that per the DRL register, the parents of Caspar 1837 are named Leonard and Maria Catherine.
One objection to Maria Catherine BECK being the mother of Caspar 1837 is that when she moves to Prospect and marries Patrick RYAN in 1848, she brings Joseph Jacob with her but not a son named Caspar. But at age 11 in 1848, Caspar would certainly have been old enough to make up his own mind as to where he wanted to live and probably would have been "taken in" by other relatives in the first place.
