  Farnam has this James GATES married to Emma Anna DICKINSON in 1881 in California; also, Farnam does not mention wife Alice BARRON. Now in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses of St. Joseph, MO, we see that James has been married twice and currently has a wife named Emma whom he married in 1895. Further, in the 1910 Census, mother-in-law Philma BRINK resides in his household. It is possible that either Emma or her mother was previously married to a DICKINSON; but in 1881, Emma would have been age 10. So it would appear that Farnam got something mixed up. Farnam has this James GATES married to Emma Anna DICKINSON in 1881 in California; also, Farnam does not mention wife Alice BARRON. Now in the 1900 and 1910 Censuses of St. Joseph, MO, we see that James has been married twice and currently has a wife named Emma whom he married in 1895. Further, in the 1910 Census, mother-in-law Philma BRINK resides in his household.
