Notes - Joseph COOLEN is believed to be the first known settler at Fox Point, It seems clear that he is not one of the Lunenburg COULON's, but rather that he is Irish by way of Newfoundland.
A man named William COOLEN, who is know to have lived at St. Margaret's Bay, states in 1808 "That your petitioner was born in Newfoundland, and has resided in this Province almost from from his childhood, his father having emigrated with his family to this country, in the year 1762", and this William COOLEN marries Dorcas INGRAM at Hubbards in 1776. Since Joseph was born ten years earlier according to his death record, that mitigates against William having been his father.
On the other hand, we know that ages at death in 1800's parish registers are highly unreliable. Further, if Joseph were born in 1766, he would still be having children at age 57, which makes one wonder if perhaps he was younger. - Joseph COOLEN is believed to be the first known settler at Fox Point, It seems clear that he is not one of the Lunenburg COULON's, but rather that he is Irish by way of Newfoundland.
