- The conventional wisdom seems to be that the second wife of Jacob LEVY was Susan Simpson BAKER, daughter of George A. and Elizabeth (YOUNG) BAKER. Unfortunately, as the flyleaf from George A. BAKER's family bible tells us, there was no daughter named Susan in this family. Further, while it is clear that the second wife (they may actually not have married) of Jacob LEVY was named Susan, I cannot find even a scintilla of evidence to indicate that she was named BAKER. And, although the third wife of Jacob LEVY was named Maria SMITH, she actually was the daughter of a George and Elizabeth BAKER. So I suspect that, somewhere along the line, some genealogist or relative got their wires crossed and a self-perpetuating error was born.
As to who she actually was, consider the following:
a. On the death certificate for Cyrus BAKER, s/o Jacob, his mother is given as Susanna SIMMS
b. There is a Susanna SIMMS b. 08 Mar 1842, illegitimate d/o Anna SIMMS
c. The ages given for Susan, wife of Jacob LEVY, in the 1871, 1881, and 1891 Censuses exactly match the DOB of Susanna SIMMS
d. Susan, wife of Jacob LEVY, is buried at Sims Cemetery, Sims Settlement.
So I strongly suspect that the second wife of Jacon LEVY is the above Susanna SIMMS.
