- As to whether the wife of George Morton BROWN is Phoebe WAMBOLDT b. 1872 or Effie WAMBOLDT b. 1876 (according the her Application for Delayed Registration of Birth):
1. The 1889 marriage record for George M. BROWN names his wife as "Phebe E. WAMBOLT" age 17, d/o Joseph and Olivia WAMBOLT.
2. If there were a Phebe b. 1872 who d. 1890 [according to one source] and an Effie b. 1876 who m. George BROWN and dies in VT, then both should show up in the1881 census in the family of Joseph WAMBOLDT. But there is only "Phebe" b. 1872 in said census.
3. The "evidence" submitted to support several Application(s) for Delayed Registration of Birth is the George and Effie BROWN family bible which lists their children in the flyleaf. In particular, the application for Percy BROWN states that said family bible records him as being the eighth child. There is a genealogy on Ancestry, placed there by someone who appears to have seen said flyleaf, that lists a first child named Lottie b. 17 Dec 1889, d. Mar 1890, and she is needed in order to count seven children before Percy. So, although I can't otherwise document her, I'm willing to risk my genuine and highly prized Canadian beaver nickel [that's as high as I ever bet], that Lottie did, in fact exist. If that's true, then a wife of George BROWN who was born 1876 would have given birth at age 13. While that's physically possible, I simply don't believe it.
4. There is no sign, in the 1881 through 1901 censuses, of two George BROWN's. So, I cannot believe that the one and only George BROWN married Phebe who d. 1890, and had a child by her sister Effie in 1889.
Therefore, to my mind, the only logical conclusion is that Phoebe Evelyn and Effie are the same person and that this person was born 4 Jan 1872 and died 13 Nov 1865.
