- In 1875, one Louisa WRIGHT, Widow, age 25, d/o Walter WRIGHT, marries one Hamilton MATTHEWS, Widower, in Shelburne County, and the question is--is this the first wife of Daniel HUBLEY 1846 of Milford. This the right age and the right parent for the bride to be the first wife of Daniel HUBLEY, who is very much still living.
On the one hand, the age 25 entry could just as easily be an age 35 entry. If her age is 35, it is almost unheard of for a woman who is of age to fib on her marriage return slip by adding years to her age. But more importantly, if she is a “geographic” widow, invariably it is the husband who runs off.
On the other hand however, in 1874, Daniel HUBLEY's father, Alexander, buys the “lands and property” of one Hamilton MATTHEWS in Annapolis County. [Source: Lois Jenkins]
I believe this connection between Hamilton MATTHEWS and Daniel outweighs other considerations and that, in fact, Lousa (WRIGHT) HUBLEY did apparently “run off” with one of the neighbors. [Bob H]
