Notes - The saga of Simon Schlagintweit reads somewhat like a soap opera. In 1857, he married Dorothea Epping, the illegitimate daughter of Elisabetha Epping. In 1865, both he and Dorothea applied to emigrate from Württemberg to Philadelphia, but she did not go. So he deserted Dorothea and his son and left for North America. Two years later, in May 1867, Dorothea married August Friedrich Braun and one month later gave birth to her second son.
