  • Notes
    • In the 1901 and 1911 Censuses, a Joseph SMITH, b. Apr 19, 1871 (or thereabouts) lives directly between the houses of John SMITH 1825 and George SMITH 1861 [1901 Census] or Lewis SMITH 1876 and said George SMITH. So it seems certain that he must belong to the family of either John SMITH 1822 or David Freeman SMITH 1834. The problem is that there is no Joseph b. abt 1871 in either family.

In the family of David SMITH, there is a Joseph Gates SMITH b. 1878 who does not appear after 1881, and an Allison SMITH b. 1872; but Allison is well known and the DOB of the missing Joseph, 1871/1872, is supported by two Census entries. So it would appear that this is the wrong family.

In the family of John SMITH, while there is no Joseph SMITH, there is Josephine SMITH (at least according to the LDS transcription of the 1881 Census) born at exactly the right time. So I think that either the Census-taker or the transcriber made an error in the sex of the child born in that household abt 1871, and “Josephine” is actually Joseph. [Bob H]
