• Notes

  The Halifax County Birth Register has her as Mary Ann Hartlen, b. 14 May 1867, while the 1901 Census has her as b. 15 May 1866. Since neither document is noted for it's accuracy, it is difficult to decide which one (if either) is correct. The 1901 Census seems to have her husband's date of birth correctly so this would seem to add weight to the 15 May 1866 date. The 1891 Census is no help as it has her as age 22, and she is missing altogether from the 1881. However, the 1871 has her as age 5. Since the 14 May date in the Halifax Birth Register was reported by her mother, my best guess is that she was born on 14 May 1866. [Bob H]
