- On 12 Feb 1866, Ellen J. SLAUGHENWHITE, age 14, dies at Terence Bay. Her mother is Ellen SLAUGHENWHITE, but in the death register entry, her father's name is abbreviated and indistinct. It appears twice, and from other handwriting on the page looks like it is “Js.” . The only other clue is that Ellen J. is Catholic.
I have looked at every known SLAUENWHITE bearing the name of James, and the most likely candidate seems to be John James and Elinor (Glover) SLAUENWHITE. In fact, if one goes only by the 1871 Census, there do not appear to be any other possibilities. But they already have a daughter named Eleanor Jane, whom Ellen J. cannot be since Eleanor Jane marries Henry Scott SLAUENWHITE and is alive and well in 1876. However, it is quite possible that Ellen J. could be Ellen (or Helen) Josephine or some such.
So, until some other evidence is unearthed, she is placed in this family. [Bob H]
