  Although he marries Margaret LAYTE in 1887 and then, as a widower, marries Sophia HUBLEY in 1895, he and Sophia are living as man and wife in the 1891 Census. So it seems fairly certain that John's children born 1889 -1893--with the possible exception of Bessie--belong to Sophia. The fact that John states he is a widower in 1895 must be viewed in light of the fact that, in July 1926, Margaret LAYTE's sister files an Application for Delayed Registration of Birth for Margaret, which almost certainly means that she is still living in 1926. So it would appear that she may have deserted John whereupon he declared himself a "geographic" widower, as a divorce or annulment seems contradicted by his widower statement. And this seems supported by the wait time until his marriage to Sophia.
